Valdemossa is one of the favorite destinations of tourists who are more into tranquility and quiet relaxation. Valdemossa only has a population of a little over a thousand inhabitants, and this seems to prove advantageous to the town. This is one of the places in Mallorca where you can find cozy hideaways if you are opting to stay away from the crowd.
When the place Valdemossa is mentioned, the magnificent sights located in this town are not the only ones remembered. It is almost always synonymous to the names of the famous 19 th century composer and writer: In 1838, the Polish pianist and composer Frederic Chopin , and the French romantic novelist George Sand (female pen name for Amandine-Aurore-Lucile Dupin ) had lived in exile in this beautiful place of Valdemossa, in order to avoid the prejudice that they were experiencing as lovers back in Paris . Sadly, they had the same plight when they got to the Mallorca Island, as people shunned them too for their affair. Nevertheless, the novels of George Sand would still get sold in the local shops. The lovers stayed in a monk s chamber in the Royal Carthusian Monastery and that winter season when they stayed in the monastery proved to be detrimental to Chopin s health. His tuberculosis had worsened, but he was miraculously able to come up with several masterpieces before he passed away. Likewise, George Sand was able to finish the celebrated novel, A Winter in Mallorca. Their ten-year affair had ended, just shortly before Chopin s death in Paris in the year 1849. Today, this historic and highly controversial story makes the Royal Carthusian Monastery a well-known tourist destination in Valdemossa.

Incidentally, after almost two centuries, another prominent couple would choose this magnificent town to build one of their residential quarters in. This Mallorcan domicile of the world-famous actors Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones is also a favorite tourist site. The said celebrity house was formerly a castle and has already made its way to the pages of Architectural Digest .
At present, there are only around three hotels in this town, but bookings may always be done in advance through the internet or with the help of your local travel agent. The accommodations are so affordable compared to other hotels in the island. Short drives or excursions may be arranged to be able to enjoy the rustic and charming sights of Valdemossa.
Valdemossa is jam-packed with sightseers during daytime. However, it can be quite the opposite during the night, which is why many of the restaurants close early. However, there are still a few restaurants that close late just in case you want to satisfy unexpected hunger. A pizza restaurant located in the length of the main road is a recommended dining place, frequented by tourists.
